Elisabeth Valerio wins her nomination challenge against ZEC #ElectionsZW
By Daniel Chigundu
United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) leader Elisabeth Valerio has won a case in which she was challenging the decision by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to reject her nomination for the Presidential election.
ZEC which is tasked with running and managing elections in Zimbabwe refused to accept Valerio’s proof of payment for the nomination allegedly demanding that they wanted the money to reflect in their accounts first.
This resulted in Valerio approaching the court to demand justice.
Writing on ots Twitter handle,Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights confirmed that Valerio won her court challenge.
“The High Court has ruled that ZEC made a mistake in refusing to accept @PresValerio’s nomination papers.
“ZEC was ordered to take all necessary steps to ensure that she is registered & that her name appears on the ballot paper as one of the Presidential candidates,” read the tweet
This means that there are now 12 Presidential Candidates contesting for President in Zimbabwe and there is now a female as well.
Valerio will need to hit the ground running as her competitors are now in full swings with their campaigns.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Nelson Chamisa, Lovemore Madhuku have all launched their campaigns.
Women face a lot of challenges in their quest for political office in Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) recently hosted a workshop that was seeking to tackle issues of political violence against women in politics.
women in Zimbabwe occupy a small percentage of people who are in decision making platforms such as Parliament.
Currently, only 70 women managed to register their interest to contest for the 210 Parliamentary seats.
