MPs cry foul: We have not been paid our sitting allowances since January
Legislators in the National Assembly have complained that they have not been paid their sitting allowances since the start of the year.
In Zimbabwe, legislators are paid a monthly salary and a sitting allowance for each day they sit on Parliament business.
Parliament has held many sittings since the beginning of the year (2024). However, according to Honourable Caston Matewu nothing has been paid in terms of allowance
‘’On a point of privilege Madam Speaker. It is now mid-July and Honourable Members have not received their allowances for this current year, which is having an impact on their welfare.
‘’Secondly, this House’s Honourable Members have not received the Constituency Development Funds for almost two years now.
‘’I ask your indulgence to ensure that Hon. Members get these things. I thank you,’’ he said.
In her ruling, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Tsitsi Gezi promised to make a ruling on the matter on Thursday.
‘’Thank your Honourable Matewu. Your point of privilege has been noted, but I am deferring my ruling to Thursday,’’ she said.
The issue of the Constituency Development Fund was also raised by Honourable Prosper Mutseyami a few weeks ago.-
