Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) candidate Regai Tsunga has the Mutasa South Constituency to a Zanu PF candidate.

According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), Tsunga polled 5269 votes against Misheck Mugadza of Zanu PF who polled 5818.

Pedzisai Tauzen of MDC Alliance polled 162 votes while an independent candidate Lynette Ndoro managed only 50 votes.

Constituency Election Officer Maurice Wellington Munzara declared Mugadza the winner in accordance with Section 66 of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2.13).

He said ‘’…. I, therefore, declare Misheck Mugadza this day of Sunday 27 March 2022 to be the duly elected Member of Parliament for Mutasa South Constituency of Mutasa Rural District Council,’’ he said.

Tsunga one of the PDP MPs who were recalled

Tsunga is one of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislators who were recalled from Parliament by Benjamin Rukanda, a man who was declared by the court as having no power to do so.

The court had declared that Tsunga and the other 5 legislators should be allowed back in Parliament. However, the Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda could have none of it.

The High Court in January ruled that the seats could not go for by-elections as they were not vacant. However, 24 hours later, another High Court judge ruled that the seats should go for by-elections.

Tsunga was serving his first term in the National Assembly. He had expressed optimism that he would win the seat back as he was unfairly recalled.

There were 28 National Assembly seats that were up for grabs in the by-elections.

Most of the seats became vacant due to recalls that were instituted in the opposition parties due to factional fights.

A few of the seats became vacant due to the death of the officeholders.

Besides the 28 National Assembly seats, there are also about 122 local authority seats that were vacant and were voted for in the same by-elections. According to ZEC, the by-elections would also see persons with disabilities also electing someone to fill their specially reserved seat in the Senate.
