MDC-T Congress: Paurina Mpariwa takes over from Mudzuri
Veteran trade unionist-cum politician Paurina Mpariwa is now the MDC-T 2nd vice president as no one showed interest in contesting her for the post.
By becoming the 2nd vice president, Mpariwa takes over from Elias Mudzuri who said he is becoming an ordinary card-carrying member as the process was not authentic.
Commenting on the issue, party president Douglas Mwonzora congratulated the winners, adding that process was democratic.
‘’We completed our nomination process for congress on the 3rd of December 2022. Voting was by secret ballot. Democracy must not be a mere byword but a way of life. Congratulations MDC for living up to our values.
‘’Congratulations Honourable Paurina Mpariwa for being successfully being nominated second Vice President of the Party. As she was not opposed, she becomes duly elected. We are proud of her background as a trade unionist and founder member of our party, he said.
Mwonzora also congratulated other members who were nominated ahead of the 5th congress. These include Sox Chikohwero, James Chidhakwa, and Yvonne Musarurwa.
‘’Congratulations Sox Chikohwero for being successfully nominated as National Chairman of the Party. As he was the only candidate to surpass the 30% threshold he becomes duly elected.
‘’Congratulations Yvonne Musarurwa for being successfully nominated Deputy National Chairperson of the Party. As she surpassed the threshold of 30%, she becomes duly elected unopposed. We now have the girlchild in the presidium.
‘’Congratulations Albert Chidhakwa for being nominated unopposed to the position of Chairperson of the Youth Assembly. By that fact, he becomes duly elected. He rose on merit through the ranks of the Youth Assembly. He is known for his impeccable discipline,’’ he said.
Besides Mudzuri, Vincent Tsvangirai has also castigated the manner in which the MDC-T is conducting its nominations for the congress posts.
Tsvangirai said he will find it difficult to contest for the election in 2023 as long as Mwonzora is party president.
Just a few days, Norest Marara who was tipped to wrestle the party presidency post from Mwonzora, approached the courts seeking an order to nullify the process. Mwonzora is accused of rigging the nomination process in a bid to safeguard his post following a fallout with many of his lieutenants who are not confident of his leadership style.
