It is a lie! MDC-T is not the automatic leader of MDC Alliance
MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has been accused of lying that MDC-T is the automatic leader of the MDC Alliance.
Mwonzora is on record saying since the MDC Alliance leadership post was occupied by the late Morgan Tsvangirai, it means whoever occupies Tsvangirai’s post becomes the leader of the alliance.
One of the seven signatories to the Alliance, Mathias Guchutu says Mwonzora is lying as there is a set criteria.
He said the agreement has no clause that talks about automatic replacement. He adding that the principals must choose based on popularity.
Guchutu revealed this during an interview on Heart and Soul TV
‘’Section 3(b) says the Presidential candidate must be selected from among the parties based on the best individual. Who can win the election against the incumbent who was the late (Robert) Mugabe then, based on popular support.
‘’3(b) is very clear the Presidential candidate must be selected, the keyword is selected from amongst the parties. The seven political parties come together and then among ourselves we select one person on basis of the best individual.

‘’We sit down and say who amongst us is the best guy, to tackle Mugabe? Who has gone through the election or who has not gone through the election? One who has the statistics behind him who can come up with 2million or three million? Who can win the election against the incumbent based on popular support?
‘’Then we go to what Mwonzora was supposedly referring to which is 3.1.1, the Presidential candidate. We are now talking about what Douglas Mwonzora was talking about. It says based on the criteria and principles outlined in 3(b). The parties agree that Morgan Richard Tsvangirai of the MDC-T shall be the alliance presidential candidate.
‘’In other words, someone might just assume that if you are MDC-T president you possibly have the tag of popular support which it might not be so if we are talking about what is on the ground. The clause names a person on the basis that we knew that the person was MDC-T he was heading MDC-T then, the idea there was to be clear about whom we are choosing.
‘’I understand the crafting was done but we were very clear in our minds that we are coming behind Richard Morgan Tsvangirai, I am sure we can forgive the agreement this is man-made after all.
Morgan Tsvangirai was the popular guy
‘’When this was crafted, it was clear that the most popular guy according to Section 3(b) was Richard Morgan Tsvangirai and even the 3(b) when they crafted that they were simply making an agreement putting it on paper but knowing behind our back that we are talking about Morgan Tsvangirai.
‘’But when we are talking of now, it is a different issue, if we are talking of Douglas Mwonzora then we need to look at this, are we saying selected, who selected him among the parties? Is he the best individual to win the election against Mnangagwa, based on popular support?
‘’So, if we take MDC-T possibly let us say according to the law it is Douglas Mwonzora, if we take Nelson Chamisa, possibly he is no longer MDC-T but in terms of popular support we know what is happening on the ground and if we take the two and we go by 3(b) what do we come up with on 3(b)1.1.
‘’So if we are to select let’s say we are all here the principals and we have Mwonzora there and we have our Chamisa there and we say amongst us who is the best individual? The principals are the ones who choose the leader. It is not automatic that is very clear according to this agreement but then it was very automatic because everybody thought if we are going there and sitting down there obviously our candidate is the late Morgan Tsvangirai,’’ he said.
