The recent arrest and detention of Zanu PF-linked businessmen Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu have sparked significant controversy.
These events followed revelations that they defrauded the government of US$87 million through a tender to supply goats.
ZACC chairperson Michael Reza confirmed in a video that there is overwhelming evidence against Chimombe, Mpofu, and Wicknell Chivhayo.
Surprisingly, only Chimombe and Mpofu have been interrogated and arrested, while Chivhayo continues to boast about his power and influence.
This raises questions about ZACC’s true motives amid fears they might be siding with one party. Chimombe and Mpofu’s extended time in remand detention might falsely reassure pro-opposition supporters that Zanu PF affiliates face justice.
However, this does not appear to be a genuine anti-corruption effort. Although ZACC expressed interest in interviewing all three men, only Chimombe and Mpofu have faced legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, Chivhayo, a known associate of Mnangagwa, remains at large and recently boasted on Facebook about his travels, labeling himself the “main actor.”
Rumors suggest Chimombe and Mpofu are being punished for leaking an audio that exposed Mnangagwa.
Zanu PF’s youth league and prominent figures have posted cryptic messages criticizing Chivhayo for name-dropping.
This gives Zimbabweans false hope that the controversial businessman would face consequences.
However, Chivhayo seems protected by unknown forces. ZACC’s track record does not inspire confidence in its commitment to fighting corruption.
Despite media exposés and several arrests, outcomes have been disappointing, raising doubts about ZACC’s effectiveness and intent.
Often, ZACC arrests suspects and then conducts prolonged investigations, leading to court acquittals due to insufficient evidence.
Therefore, while some might believe ZACC is earnest in arresting Chimombe and Mpofu, their failure to apprehend Chivhayo suggests otherwise.
They might be playing a role in a private battle of tenderpreneurs under instructions from influential figures.
Given Chivhayo’s boastful claims about his connection to Mnangagwa, it is plausible the President himself is orchestrating these moves.
