Zimbabwe is expected to hold a general election in 2023, which will mark the second term for President Emmerson Mnangagwa if he wins.

The 2023 general elections will also see the clauses that were amended in the Constitution Amendment Act No.2 coming into force.

Some of the changes include the removal of the running-mate clause, the creation of 10 seats for youth in the National Assembly, and proportional representation seats for women in local authorities.

Already there is the Electoral Act Amendment Bill before Parliament to help actualize some of the provisions, such as the formula to be used to calculate how the proportional representation seats in local authorities will be done, as well as the youth quota.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to announce election dates end of May.

The battle in the 2023 elections is expected to be among Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zanu PF), Nelson Chamisa (Citizens Coalition for Change), and Douglas Mwonzora (MDC-T).

However, there are new opposition political parties that have also emerged that could potentially dilute the dominance of the three leading parties.
