Harare City Council has advised that it is going to embark on a name and shame exercise as a way of encouraging debtors to settle their debts.
Zimbabwe’s capital, is reportedly owed in excess of ZiG940 million, by residents, businesses, government and parastatals in unpaid utility bills.
This huge sum has seen it failing to provide meaningful services such as refuse collection, fixing burst sewage pipes, fixing potholes and consistent water supplies to its residents.
However, in a statement on its Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) pages, Harare said this money is what is supposed to be used to provide the much needed service delivery.
‘’The City of Harare is owed in excess of ZiG940 million by residents, businesses, parastatals and government departments among others.
‘’This is money that is needed to run the city operations and service delivery operations. We have since started issuing final demands and summons to our debtors.
‘’The summons will be served to all our debtors without fear or favour. The city will also embark on a name and shame exercise to encourage debtors to settle if they fail to honour their payments.
‘’Names of debtors will be posted on social media platforms and at all district offices in Harare.
‘’To avoid the inconveniences of being taken to court with the possibility of losing property like houses, debtors are urged to immediately settle with the city. Our banking halls are open every week day from 8am to 5pm,’’ read the statement.
Harare is supposed to be getting devolution funds from the government, however, part of its share is reportedly being by the government to finance the controversial Geo Pomona Waste to energy deal.
