#ElectionsZW: I lost because I didn’t campaign in my constituency
Labour Economist and African Democrats (LEAD) president Linda Masarira said she failed to win in Harare Central because she did not have time to campaign as she was busy teaching her party members.
Masarira’s party which contested elections for the first time was composed of candidates who had no history of political participation.
This resulted in the outspoken opposition politician taking it upon herself to teach them the ropes.
In an interview, Masarira said this consumed most of her time as she tried to ensure all systems were in place for her party candidates.
‘’I hardly campaigned during the period, as I was so consumed with also making sure that all my other candidates knew what they were doing because these were first-timers with the elections.
‘’I had to be very active in their own campaigns, looking for resources, looking for funding, and making sure that I train all the polling agents it was all in my hands.
‘’So, I hardly got time to be in my constituency campaigning and talking to the people as I was also teaching the new people who are new in politics, who were learning in this election period. So, for me I think I would have come out better had I been more visible in my constituency of which I was hardly visible that is the whole truth,’’ she said.
Masarira was contesting against Murisi Zwizwai of Citizens Coalition for Change, Henry Rukanda of MAAT Zimbabwe, Norest Marara of MDC Alliance, and Loice Magweba of Zanu PF.
Zwizwai won the seat with about 3332 votes, with Magweba getting 1 375, Marara with 65 votes, Masarira managing 20 votes, and Rukanda managed only 3 votes.
This is not the first time that Masarira has in her bid for the Harare Central Constituency seat, as she also lost in the 2018 general elections.
