#ElectionsZW: Electoral reforms will help send a positive message for Zimbabwe: US
The United States Embassy in Zimbabwe has said implementing the much-talked-about electoral reforms will help send a positive message for Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe is trying to put out a positive message to the international community that it has reformed.
Since coming to power in November 2017, the Emmerson Mnangagwa led government has sent emissaries across the world to with a message that it is different from the former.
However, all its efforts appear to be hitting a brick wall, and the US Embassy believes electoral reforms can do the trick.
Writing on its Twitter handle, the Embassy said ‘’#ZimElectoralReform that guarantees fair competition as called for in Zimbabwe’s constitution would send a strong signal to the international community that the Zimbabwean government will respect democratic processes.
‘’#ZimElectoralReform would also meet the recommendations for legitimate, credible, and peaceful elections outlined in the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA),’’ the tweets.
Zimbabwe is set to hold by-elections on the 26th of March this year to replace legislators and councillors who were recalled due to factional politics in both MDC and Zanu PF.
Some of the councillors and legislators to be replaced succumbed to various diseases including COVID-19.
Various opposition political parties and election observers have called for electoral and media reforms in Zimbabwe.
It is widely believed that the current state of affairs favours the ruling party Zanu PF.
The ruling party has often been accused of using state resources to further its cause during election time.
State-owned media such as The Herald and ZBC have not been forthcoming in carrying messages that glorify opposition parties in the country.
Although there have been calls for reforms, Harare appears to be unmoved by the calls and even the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has also been found wanting on several occasions when it comes to relaying election messages.
