Mwonzora is abusing MDC-T funds, he is not funding important party organs (Watch video)

A video by OpenParly of MDC Alliance losing candidate for Epworth Constituency Zivai Mhetu has exposed possible abuse of party funds in the MDC-T.

The party is a beneficiary of the ZW$500 million that was disbursed to political parties in the 2022 annual year from the treasury.

According to the Political Parties Finance Act Section 3(2), political parties that attain at least 5% of seats in Parliament are entitled to a share of the money.

The Government Gazette that was published on the 25th of January 2022, indicate that the ruling party Zanu PF got ZW$350 150 000 for their 70.03 seats in Parliament while the MDC-T got about ZW$149 850 000 for amassing 29.97% seats in Parliament.

The funds are meant to help the political parties to finance their activities so that they will not get funding from outside the country.

However, a video interview by OpenParly indicates that the funds received by the Douglas Mwonzora led party is being abused.

Mhetu, who was suspended from the MDC-T said party leader Mwonzora is abusing the party funds at the expense of the party organs.

‘’Since the time he (Douglas Mwonzora) has been receiving government grants he has never funded the security department, he has never funded the crucial departments of the party like the organising, information, mobilisation, and recruitment.

‘’You know it is the duty of security to make an assessment and advise the party whether to go into an election or not. I really felt humiliated by losing dismally in Epworth, had he funded the security department it could have advised everyone to boycott elections until a time when the party would be able to contest.

‘’So, Douglas Mwonzora is so incompetent and is an appendage of Zanu PF, that is why he is fighting this voice of dissent,’’ said Mhetu.

However, Mhetu is not the only person who has accused Mwonzora of abusing party funds. During the party’s extraordinary congress, several people accused the lawyer-cum-politician of abusing party funds to fund his campaigns. A report was even made to the police by one Murimoga but so far nothing has happened to the veteran politician.
