#ElectionsZW: Khupe splits from Mwonzora’s MDC-T
Proportional Representation legislator Thokozani Khupe has announced a split with MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora.
The split comes barely a day after the MDC-T announced that it had suspended Khupe pending investigation into various cases of misconduct.
According to the MDC-T letter that was signed by Witness Dube and shared with the media, the suspension was to allow for investigations to be carried out.
However, in a press conference that was held in Bulawayo today, Khupe said there are now two MDC-Ts.
‘’This day, the 21st of January 2022. I announce that the MDC-Tsvangirai has split and there are two MDC-Ts formations. One led by yours truly Dr. Thokozani Khupe’’
Khupe never saw eye to eye with Mwonzora
Khupe is one of the MDC founding members. However, she has not been seeing eye to eye with MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora since the December 2020 extraordinary congress.
The veteran female opposition politician is of the view that Mwonzora won the party presidency through cheating.
However, Mwonzora refutes the allegations.
Mwonzora accuses Khupe of trying to have him arrested on the eve of the extraordinary congress for looting party funds.
According to the letter of suspension that was signed by Mwonzora, Khupe is the one who hired Patson Murimoga to make a police report over the alleged missing ZW$6 million from MDC-T coffers.
He also alleges that she instructed Amos Kaliati to challenge the extraordinary congress results at the High Court.
Mwonzora also accuses Khupe of holding meetings with political parties that are hostile to MDC-T without authorisation.
This is not the first time that Khupe has split from the MDC-T. In 2018, Khupe split from MDC-T led by Nelson Chamisa. She went to form her own MDC-T which she used to contest the 2018 general elections.
It however remains to be seen if Khupe will not be recalled from Parliament when it resumes sitting in February.
