#ElectionsZW: MDC-T suspends Thokozani Khupe
MDC-T says it has suspended its first vice president Thokozani Khupe over undisclosed issues with immediate effect.
Khupe a founding member of the MDC-T, approached the court a few weeks ago seeking to block Douglas Mwonzora from recalling her and other legislators from Parliament.
In a statement that was signed by party secretary for information and publicity Witness Dube, Khupe was given a letter of suspension on the 12th of January.
According to the party, the suspension is to allow investigations to be carried out.
‘’The MDC-T wishes to advise that first vice president Dr. Thokozani Khupe has been suspended. A letter dated 12 January 2022 was personally delivered to Dr. Khupe and her legal team.
‘’The suspension was with immediate effect, pending investigations into the various allegations levelled against her.
‘’Investigations are being conducted by a team led by the party’s Arbiter General. The suspension is in line with the party constitution and is as a result of certain issues that arose. Once the said issues are investigated and fully resolved, the party will communicate such,’’ read the letter.
Khupe and Mwonzora were always at loggerheads
Khupe and party president Douglas Mwonzora have not been seeing eye to eye since the December 2020 extraordinary congress where they competed against each other.
According to Khupe, Mwonzora rigged the congress election that was conducted at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).
Although Mwonzora had indicated that they had buried their differences, the two continue to issue contrasting statements.
Khupe is in Parliament courtesy of Mwonzora’s benevolence after she lost the Presidential election in 2018 where she only amassed about 48 000 votes countrywide.
The outspoken Khupe is expected to address a press conference in Bulawayo tomorrow at McDonalds Hall and speculators are of the view that she is going to suspend Mwonzora and his loyalists.
Khupe has been the main figure in the fight for the seat that was left by the late Morgan Tsvangirai who died of cancer in February of 2018.
At first, she was at loggerheads with MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.
