Veteran opposition politician Dr Tapiwa Mashakada has resigned from the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) following his appointment as a Commissioner of the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC).
The MDC is currently led by Douglas Mwonzora.
In a formal resignation letter seen by this publication today, Mashakada said his decision was a matter of constitutional propriety and principle.
“I hereby formally advise you of my decision to step down as National Chairman of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and to resign my membership of the Party with immediate effect,” he wrote.
Why He Resigned
Mashakada said the ZMC is a Chapter 12 independent constitutional institution that requires Commissioners to discharge their duties “independently, professionally, impartially and without political affiliation.”
He explained how he had transparently acquired his new appointment.
“Parliament’s Standing Rules and Orders Committee (SROC) advertised vacancies for ZMC Commissioners in the last quarter of 2025.
Mashakada said he applied, was shortlisted and interviewed in public.
Following the interviews, the SROC recommended him to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
He was subsequently appointed as Commissioner on 12 September 2026.
“In order to uphold the constitutional requirements and preserve the independence and integrity of the ZMC, I hereby resign as National Chairman of MDC.
“(I also) relinquish my membership of the Party with immediate effect.”
End of an Era
Mashakada has been a central figure in the MDC since its formation in 1999.
He served as MP for Hatfield since 2000, Secretary General, and Minister of Industry and Commerce during the Government of National Unity.
He thanked the party for the opportunity to serve.
“I wish to place on record my appreciation for the opportunity to have served the Party and its membership in various capacities over the years.
“I remain grateful for the many years of service and the experiences that have shaped my public life.”
“My resignation is therefore a matter of principle and constitutional propriety.
“(It) should not be construed as arising from any personal animosity or ill will towards the Party or its leadership.”
The MDC is yet to announce his successor as National Chairman.
