Two Reasons Why Marara Is Running For MDC-T presidency
Losing Harare Central candidate and MDC-T secretary for programs and party business, Norest Marara has resolved to contest for the top party post in the upcoming congress.
Marara ran in the 26 March 2022 by-elections under the leadership of MDC-T President Douglas Mwonzora but lost to CCC candidate Murisi Zwizwai who had been recalled from parliament by the MDC.
Seven months after losing the constituency elections Marara now wants to take over from the current president who is yet to announce the dates for the overdue congress.
“Once the MDC-T 5th elective congress date has been proclaimed, I will present myself for the post of President,” posted Marara on his Twitter timeline.
In an interview with Open Parly ZW Marara confirmed his intentions and highlighted that his experience gave him the impetus to run for the job.
“I think I have what it takes to run for that position.
“I think there is need for one to be experienced in terms of one running an institution or an organisation, I am one such character who has built something from zero, so running an institution like the MDC will be very easy for me.
Asked what he would do differently if elected Marara said it was too early to get into detail.
“Unfortunately, I am not a candidate yet, I cannot get into more detail safe to say that it is true that I want to run.
“Having accessed myself, I think I have what it takes to run the institution better,” he added.
According to the party constitution the president has the responsibility to announce the date for congress.
Despite announcing the congress for June 2022 earlier in the year, the congress dates continue being postponed.
Congress Dates To Be Announced In Due Course
Although Marara is confident that the congress dates will be announced soon, he insisted that general party members were getting anxious.
“Congress dates have not been proclaimed so by getting into more detail it effectively means I am campaigning, all I want to do right now is to confirm that it is true that I want to run and I am running for office.
“There is a worry among the general memberships about the continued delay in conducting the congress because it is long overdue.
“But the president has given reasons why we can’t do it, one of them being lack of resources.
“Recently, he said that the government grant that we receive was coming out, so I don’t think we have to worry much, we expect the dates to be proclaimed anytime soon.
