Rushinga legislator Tendai Nyabani has called on the government to put in place a Statutory Instrument that will deal with Mutoriro which has flooded the streets.
Mutoriro is one of the many illicit brews that are doing the rounds in the streets across the country.
Due to its lower prices, the brew has become a favourite of many young people who are mainly in the unemployed category.
However, Honourable Nyabani told the National Assembly that something needs to be done about the brew as it is affecting young people who are deemed to be the future of the country.
‘’My point of national interest is that I came to this august House debating about illicit brews like mutoriro and drug abuse. Looking at where I come from, there is a lot of drug abuse; I would not know what is happening in other constituencies, but I believe this is a universal challenge where you find people taking these recreational drugs.
‘’If mutoriro is given to pests they die. Imagine if this same brew is consumed by human beings, how then do we expect Zimbabwe to develop when young people are focusing on drugs, and some are dying?
‘’Mutoriro is found in every corner without any control mechanism tocurb the proliferation of such dangerous drugs. I would like to therefore implore responsible authorities to take drastic measures so as to eradicate the peddling of drugs and illicit brews. Does it then imply that people are now allowed to participate in the distribution of illicit brews and illegal drugs?
‘’ I am asking this because we have not seen people being prosecuted for trading in these illegal substances like mutoriro, guka and tumbwa. I therefore would like to propose that people should be prosecuted for participating in such activities because if this is not done, it is going to affect our nation and our own people in the near future. It is prudent that as Government, we should promulgate a Statutory Instrument to deal specifically with the peddling of drugs and illicit brews. I thank you,’’ he said.
In response, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Tsitsi Gezi advised Honourable Nyabani to prepare a motion on the matter.
‘’You spoke about a critical issue of national importance which affects every Zimbabwean and which has the potential to disturb lives in the future of Zimbabwe. I, therefore, implore you to prepare a motion which you would move so that it is debated in this august House, which will culminate in the debate generating recommendations. Laws are made in this august House,’’ she said.
