#Chamisa introduces Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)
Youthful politician Nelson Chamisa has introduced a new party named Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
The new name replaces the toxic MDC Alliance name which had become a subject for debate.
Speaking during a press conference Chamisa said ‘’We will now go by the name Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
Chamisa said impending by-elections will act as a dress rehearsal for the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Zimbabwe is going to hold by-elections on the 26th of March this year to replace about 28 legislators who were recalled by MDC-T, Peoples Democratic Party, and Zanu PF, as well as some who died of various diseases including COVID-19.
Chamisa said his was a new party and represents the new and is different from the old.
‘’We are not only having a new name but a new organisation, a new entity.
‘’2023 is already a done deal. We have done it, that is why they are shaking, they know the game is on,’’ he said.
Chamisa was under pressure to change name
The former Kuwadzana East legislator has been under pressure from supports and citizens to dump the MDC name tag and adopt a new one.
Just recently MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora wrote to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) trying to block others including Chamisa from using the name MDC Alliance in the impending by-elections.
According to Mwonzora, he is the leader of the MDC Alliance by virtue of being leader of MDC-T. MDC-T was the bigger partner in the alliance of seven parties that was signed in 2017.
A few days ago, seasoned female opposition politician Thokozani Khupe announced that she was splitting with Mwonzora. She said she was leading her own MDC-T. This was a result of a fall-out that ensued following an extraordinary congress in December of 2020.
It now remains to be seen how Chamisa who has been under the MDC name in his entire political career will fair with a new name.
