Mayors Forum: A time to take stock ahead of 2023 elections
The 2022 edition of the Mayor’s Forum will give mayors, former mayors and councillors an opportunity to account for service delivery as the country moves toward the 2023 elections.
Zimbabwe is expected to hold general elections between July and August of 2023, amid an outcry from residents and citizens that councillors have given them a raw deal.
However, councillors have largely blamed interference from the Ministry of Local Government for their visible poor showing.
Most cities, towns and rural district councils have been plagued by water shortages which have resulted in the drilling of boreholes across the country, there is the issue of potholes on the roads, shambolic billing systems, and uncontrollable sewage flowing everywhere among many others.
Beyond the issue of service delivery, there is also the issue of fire tenders which were procured by the government on behalf of the local authorities, and the issue of devolution funds disbursements.
Among the mayors making it on the panel, this year include Action Nyamukondiwa, the Mayor of Kadoma, Sylvester Gumisarai (Norton), Simbarashe Nyahuye (Marondera), Lovemore Maiko (former Mayor of Chitungwiza), Blessing Tandi (former Mayor of Mutare) and Councillor Tapiwa Murima from Domboshava.
There are also efforts to include the mayor of Lusaka and a governor of one of the states in Nigeria to give the discussion a continental look.
Mayors Forum is one of the exciting discussions that have been lined up for the 8th edition of Hub Unconference.
Hub Unconference is a leading annual conference on digital media, innovation and new ideas which are hosted concurrently with the annual Shoko Festival.
This year the festival will be running under the theme #PARTYcipate – creatively encouraging young people to engage in the big issues that will define their futures.
The Hub Unconference is set to run from the 27th of September to the 1st of October at Moto Republik and this year is assuming a hybrid format due to the relaxation of COVID-19 protocols by the government.
In the past editions, the Hub Unconference has hosted prominent local and international speakers such as Alice McCool (The Guardian UK), Robyn Kriel (CNN), Raheela Mahomed (Al Jazeera) and Lindiwe Zulu from the ANC among many others–
