Stop the Demolition of Over 5,000 Houses: Protect Harare Families and Communities
Attention Mayor of Harare Jacob Mafume
This petition calls for the urgent intervention to halt the Harare City Council's planned demolition of over 5,000 homes in high-density suburbs like Kuwadzana, Budiriro, Glen View, and Mabvuku. The demolitions, sanctioned by 37 High Court orders, threaten to displace thousands of families, including children, with no clear alternative housing arrangements.
While the City Council argues the houses are illegal and built on land intended for essential services such as schools, clinics, and recreational facilities, the human cost of these demolitions is too severe to ignore. Families risk losing their homes, livelihoods, and access to basic needs, exacerbating Harare's housing and social crises.
We urge the Harare City Council, High Court, and relevant authorities to:
- Suspend the planned demolitions until humane alternatives and proper resettlement plans are established.
- Hold accountable the land barons and corrupt officials responsible for illegal land sales, instead of punishing innocent families.
- Engage with affected residents to explore sustainable solutions that uphold housing rights while addressing urban planning issues.
Every Harare resident deserves access to safe housing and essential services without the fear of forced eviction. Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with the families affected and demand a fair and just resolution.
