  • Chikurubi Maximum Prison is a Grade 4 prison which has the highest security in the country. It has a holding capacity of 1114 against 2689 inmates who were in at the time of the visit. Amongst these, they had those under the psychiatric section who are under treatment awaiting confirmation by doctors on their status, whether they could go to court or they had to be discharged. Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison was facing a number of challenges. The Prison had a challenge of water. Electricity was also a problem which affected availability of water as they did not have solar powered boreholes. On health, their major challenge was drugs especially for chronic illnesses. They were facing challenges with uniforms, prison garb and the orange cloth for the convicted inmates.
