MDC Alliance secretary for Local Government Rural Development Sesel Zvidzai has called on the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) to investigate Minister July Moyo for ignoring procurement laws.
Moyo who is Minister of Local Government in the new dispensation is alleged to have instructed staff at Harare City Council to source water pumps worth US$9.3 million outside tender processes.
This, the MDC Alliance which controls Harare City Council in terms of Councillors says show that Moyo is corrupt and must be investigated.
In a statement, Zvidzai said July Moyo should be held accountable for his actions.
“We call upon the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, and the National Prosecution Authority to urgently investigate Minister Moyo and hold him to account for his corrupt conduct that is prejudicing taxpayers and citizen who will, as a result, be deprived of decent service delivery.
“As highlighted by President Nelson Chamisa in his Agenda 2021 address, the fight against corruption is one of the key pillars in our People’s Agenda. Corruption is choking the ordinary person and we call upon all progressive forces and citizens to converge with the MDC alliance to fight against this scourge.
“We demand accountability and transformation on all matters of maladministration. The fight against corruption must be driven by a broad alliance. It must overshadow our political polarities because it is killing all sectors of our society”, he said.
MDC Alliance and Zanu PF are currently fighting for control of the country’s capital city.
Zanu PF is using central government to influence some of the staff at the council, while MDC Alliance relies on its councillors who are the majority.
The majority of senior management at the country have been arrested while some are on suspensions from work.
Mayor Jacob Mafume was also suspended by the government. This unavailability of senior management has seen the Ministry of Local Government has a major say in the city’s operations.
