The Death Penalty Abolition Bill which was proposed by Dzivarasekwa Legislator Edwin Mushoriwa has passed through Parliament is now waiting for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s signature.
The Bill seeks to abolish the death penalty from Zimbabwe’s statutes and has the backing of President Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa is said to have escaped the death penalty due to his age and from there he has always been seeking to have the penalty abolished.
Speaking in the National Assembly Honourable Mushoriwa paid tribute to the government for pushing the Bill through all the stages of Parliament.
‘’Thank you Madam Speaker for giving me this opportunity to stand on a matter of privilege.
‘’Madam Speaker, I would like to take this opportunity and ask Honourable Members to thank the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs who is the Leader of Government Business, for steering the Death Penalty Abolition Bill in this House as well as the Senate. I think such a job deserves a pam-pam and I want to thank the Hon. Member,’’ he said.
