Zimbabwean police brutally dispersed dozens of opposition supporters and arrested several outside a Harare court yesterday, following the denial of bail to 79 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party members.
The CCC members, including interim leader Jameson Timba, were arrested on June 16 for holding a peaceful political gathering deemed unauthorized by the authorities.
Eyewitnesses described the scene outside the court as chaotic, with police anti-riot units guarding the entrance and arresting anyone suspected of supporting the opposition.
“It was like a war zone,” said one eyewitness. “Police were beating people with batons and arresting anyone who dared to protest.”
