Exiled former cabinet minister Professor Jonathan Moyo has rubbished MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora’s ignorance towards the law regarding the MDC Alliance Composite Political Agreement (CPA) signed on the 5th of August 2017.

Moyo clapped back at Mwonzora saying he did not need to be a lawyer to know that the 2017 CPA was a pre-2018 which did not mutate into a post-2018 election coalition government because it did not win the election.

This comes after Mwonzora recently announced that the MDC-T would contest the March 26 by-elections under the MDC Alliance banner arguing that Moyo was not familiar with the law and had misinterpreted the CPA which was still legal and binding.

Moyo however, slammed Mwonzora’s claims saying the CPA’s tenure lapsed in post-2018 and that there is no post-2018 alliance agreement to contest the upcoming elections.

“Agreements have a duration. The 2017 MDC-A pre-2018 election Agreement did not mutate into a post-2018 election coalition government because the pre-2018 election alliance (MDC-A) did not win the 2018 election. As such, the 2017 pre-election (MDC-A) Agreement expired in 2018.

“Since 2018, no pre-election alliance agreement has been entered into by MDC-T with any party for 2022 by-elections or 2023 elections or any elections.

“The MDC-T cannot use an expired 2018 agreement which was never renewed, for 2022 by-elections or 2023 elections,” said Moyo.

He added that the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa was not connected to the 2017 (MDC-A) pre-2018 election agreement nor to any pre-election alliance, but a political party formed in 2019 and entitled to its political rights.

Mwonzora is on record that his MDC-T party will contest the impending by-elections under the banner of the MDC Alliance.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa pronounced 26 March 2022 as the date for the by-elections to fill the vacant parliamentary seats. The seats most of them became vacant through recalls by both Zanu PF and MDC-T, s well as the death of legislators.
