Dzivarasekwa legislator Edwin Mushoriwa says the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is failing to do its work properly because it is being used as a political weapon.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday-Talk, Honourable Mushoriwa said “I think if ZACC was competent enough, we should actually have seen a number of people that were actually arrested.

“The second impediment to ZACC is the problem of our politics, we feel that ZACC is being used in more ways as a political weapon to deal with political opponents and sometimes ZACC has also actually joined what we have seen the police doing, where you arrest and then you investigate later.

“Out of 10 in my view is that ZACC is possibly operating between 3 and 4 out of 10 in terms of its mandate of cabbing corruption in this country,” he said.

According to Honourable Mushoriwa fighting corruption is not a priority of the current government as can be evidenced by the creation of another arm to fight corruption in the President’s Office.

“Another challenge that happened is that, even though the constitution is clear, we should have ZACC, the President has actually seen it fit to then create another arm under Thabani Mpofu under his office purported to fight corruption.

“That tells you the issue of fighting corruption is not a priority as far as this government is concerned because if the government surely wanted to ensure that corruption is cabbed, what was supposed to happen was not to create another entity, but to pour resources to ZACC, and then also Parliament should also summon ZACC to get reports pertaining to what they are actually doing.

“At the moment am not happy with the performance of our anti-corruption drive. We are chasing the small guys but the big guys who are actually corrupt, we are letting them scot-free,” he added.
