Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) which is fronted by Nelson Chamisa had called upon the ministry of Home Affairs and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to harmonize activities ahead of the elections to ensure a successful voter registration exercise.

ZEC is currently conducting a 10-day-long voter registration blitz which runs from 12 March to 21 March 2023.

At the same time, the civil registry on the other hand is conducting an identity document blitz during the same time in a bid to aid the voter registration exercise.

Speaking to members of the media on Thursday CCC deputy secretary for elections Ellen Shiriyedenga expressed disappointment over the lack of harmony in the institutions that make it possible for youths to register to vote.

Shiriyedenga Speaks

” Firstly, there is the malalignment of the voter registration blitz with the identify cards issuance.

“There was the notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs, however, we say that is not enough.

“We had hoped that ZEC was going to sit down with the Ministry of Home Affairs and come up with a calendar which will show some concurrence between the two institutions but clearly that was not done.

“The danger to this is we will go back to the same dilemma in January 2022 and April 2022 when we had the first and second blitz.

“We had a situation where ZEC went ahead first and attempted to register people out of a population of about 2 million and they managed to register about 220 000 which was a merger of 8 percent.

“If that problem between the two institutions is not addressed then we risk having young people failing to register because they don’t have identity card documents,” she said.

Shiriyedenga also raised concern over the malfunctioning of Biometric voter registration (BVR) machines and power cuts which have affected the blitz so far.
